Tobias Wolff’s â€Å"Hunters in the Snow† centers on the actions and personalities of Kenny, Frank and Tub as they embark on a hunting trip during the winter. Each character faces problems (in character or otherwise) which they attempt to cover up through deception – the central theme in this short story – in order to accept their respective actions. The consequences of these cover ups profoundly change the power of each character over another. Furthermore, the characters don’t realize how their lies influence others around them. Kenny is a quintessential bully. His need for power over the other two causes him to assert control of any action be it driving or asking for permission to hunt on private grounds. In truth, he doesn’t even wish to ask for permission but is pressured by Frank to do so. Kenny’s seemingly flippant mannerisms also follow from his desire to be the alpha-male. He insults and mercilessly teases Frank and Tub about their insecurities. He pretends to desire to run over Tub after appearing an hour late and immediately silences any objection from Tub. However, he neither realizes how far he is pushing Tub nor the peril he is in. His stupid actions leading up to and after the murder of the old dog finally push Tub, who legitimately fears for his life, to retaliate. This immediately puts Kenny’s life at the hands of his bully victims and leaves a power vacuum to be filled. Tub’s main problem is his denial of the poor eating habits that he has. He adamantly tries to convince others that his problem is due to his glans despite acutely knowing that he gorges himself on unhealthy foods in solitude. The insecurity he feels about being found out causes him to become easily manipulated and bullied by Frank and Kenny. Moreover, the retaliation against Kenny only adds to the insecurity Tub has and he immediately searches for approval and protection against the consequence of shooting Kenny. Frank fills in this vacuum and manipulates Tub into siding with him. Frank himself faces the issue of adultery. His lust for another woman causes him to deceive himself into believing that this new female is the love of his life despite a small part of his conscience stating otherwise. He even goes as far as to perverse the beliefs of that small part by asserting that his reluctance is only due to the good that his wife had done him and the kids they had. Frank’s self-deception inadvertently acts on Tub’s insecurities, prompting Tub to open up about his problems to Frank. By deceiving himself to accept his adultery, Frank pushes Tub to accept the eating problems that Tub has by giving in to Tub’s urges. Frank is unaware that his acceptance of adultery has already influenced Tub to succumb to Tub’s desires (shown by the fact that Tub decides to open up to Frank). Each character has major issues that need to be corrected but prefer to deceive themselves and others than accept the truth and work towards correction. As such, Kenny lies in mortal peril, Frank gains newfound power in the group and over Tub, and Tub remains submissive to Frank’s wishes. Moreover, the newfound confidence in Frank leads him to ignore common sense in going back to retrieve vital directions to the hospital. The futures of these three characters is left hanging, however it is clear that the ending has each one moving down separate and erroneous paths.

In her piece â€Å"On Compassion†, Barbara Ascher describes brief scenes that capture the basis of transaction between the helpless and those in a position to give help, arguing that the only way society can achieve true compassion is by truly identifying with the suffering of others. Ascher observes the world around her as a member of society, describing encounters between those in a place of misery and those in normal walks of life. As she observes the â€Å"grinning man† on the street corner and the old man who smelled of â€Å"cigarettes and urine†, she distinguishes herself from her fellow human beings. Ascher notices these people, while others â€Å"look away† and â€Å"daydream a bit†, making her stand out as someone who can acknowledge and understand those in times of hardship. Because Ascher writes as someone who can identify with adversity, she succeeds in persuading society as a whole to embrace compassion through understanding. Ascher takes up an extremely accusatory tone, directly exposing the mayor of New York City’s misguided motives behind the â€Å"involuntary hospitalization† of the homeless in his city. Ascher questions the grounds upon which these people act to enforce her argument that humanity must learn to identify with the â€Å"rags with voices† to become truly compassionate. Psychology is a human science and should thereby leave the study of biology to the biologists. Psychology, as defined by the APA is, ‘the study of the mind and behaviour’(APA, 2013), this definition states that psychology is indeed separate to that of biology as biology by definition is ‘the branch of science concerned with the structure, function, growth, evolution, and distribution of living and non-living organisms’ (biology online, 2013), this implies that the two are indeed two different disciplines which do not require interaction, as they are simply focusing on different things. A good example of the two disciplines being separate, is psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis, a method of therapy developed by Freud and still used widely today, focuses on the subconscious and says that mental illness is caused by underlying traumas, repressed memories and unconscious desires. If these are brought to the surface, by the patient verbalising under hypnosis of these repressed, unconscious and underlying issues, it is thought that by uncovering them they will find answers. Psychoanalysis has no foundations in biology and even as it has been expanded upon by people such as Adler and Jung, still does not believe that biology is relevant to psychology (Kandel, 1999). The simple fact that they are, still to this day, separate disciplines again reinforces that they are separate spheres of study and should remain that way. Analyse William Golding’s choice of language during and after the killing of Simon. Why does the language use change?

â€Å"Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!† This is the chant that begins the section, increased in its violence as it now says â€Å"kill the beast† representing the feelings of the boys. They want to destroy the beast but can't find it as it is inside each of them. This causes them to get ever more angry and frenzied, starting a ritualistic â€Å"dance† with â€Å"the chant† beating â€Å"like a steady pulse†. This is reminiscent of Simon's experience earlier when a â€Å"pulse started to throb in his temple†, just before he went into a fit. This suggests that the boys are also going into a trance or fit, but a much more dangerous one, unaware of their actions. They lose their individuality and start â€Å"the throb and stamp of a single organism†, again with the throbbing and stamping inducing images of a trance-like ritual. Also the symbolisms of circles and the weather are repeated. The circle now â€Å"yawns emptily† waiting to catch someone inside. The weather is threatening, â€Å"Thunder boomed†¦the dark sky was shattered†¦scar†¦blow of a gigantic whip†. This is a great contrast to the clear skies earlier in the book that symbolised peace. Now they begin to become terrified by the weather and the trance and out of this terror â€Å"rose another desire, thick, urgent, blind†. This is the frantic, unthinking desire of bloodlust. The boys don't want to think about what they are doing, Simon is called â€Å"Him!† and â€Å"the beast† and â€Å"the thing†. This is because the boys are trying to dehumanize him in their great desire to kill something that could be the beast. However, Golding calls Simon by name just once, the effect being that we see this as the mindset of the boys. The imagery when Simon is finally murdered is very vivid, with the mouth comparison drawn again, â€Å"The mouth of the circle crunched and screamed†. This gives the impression of someone being eaten alive. Simon is shown to be helpless. He doesn't even try to defend himself; he just â€Å"struggles free†. He is completely innocent and Christ-like comparisons are drawn by these things and also because he is still trying to save them from themselves as he â€Å"was crying out against the abominable noise something about a beast on a hill.† When he falls down onto the sand he is leapt upon. â€Å"There were no words and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws†. The use of â€Å"claws† draws comparisons with beasts and shows the boys' savagery and animalistic actions. There are no words, symbolizing the complete breakdown of civilization and communication. Nobody is exempt from this original sin and even Piggy joins in. They completely destroy Simon, taking pleasure in the mutilation of his body. After Simon's death â€Å"the clouds opened† as if they are taking him up to heaven. The rain acts as a â€Å"cold shower† and breaks up the savages. Golding reminds us of the age and vulnerability of these boys and Simon especially, â€Å"they could see how small a beast it was and already its blood was staining the sand.† A great wind blows the parachutist off the mountain in a tribute to Simon. He has removed the beast from the island, though he had to die to do it. We could look deeper and say that this shows he has only removed the symbol or personification of the beast. The parachutist was never the beast, nor was Simon, but they were used as the personification of the evil which still remains inside all of the boys. After the rain ends, the mood completely changes, from frantic and urgent to calm and serene. The â€Å"incredible lamps of stars† â€Å"cool†¦clear air† make Simon's death seem peaceful, natural and spiritual. The images are of â€Å"silver† â€Å"phosphoresce† â€Å"pearls† â€Å"clear water†¦clear sky† â€Å"strange moonbeam bodied creatures†. These all give a heavenly, spiritual and peaceful feel as does the alliteration of ‘s' sounds; â€Å"Softly surrounded by a fringe of inquisitive creatures, itself a silver shape beneath the steadfast constellations.† This makes Simon's death seem beautiful and the violence of the reality unimaginable. Golding uses the violent, urgent, frenzied language during Simon's death to show the feeling surrounding it. He uses the calm, peaceful and spiritual language afterwards, when his body is carried away as a reminder as to the kind of person Simon was and how different he was to the others.

Playing in each of those games gives a special feeling that no one can get enough of. I prepare for it all year long, doing different sorts of exercises such as running, lifting, jumping rope, and anything that I could think of to help me be the best athlete I could possibly be. No matter how hard someone could prepare for football there is only one thing that will truly make someone the best they could ever be and that my friend is heart. If they do not have heart they will not make it anywhere, not only in football but in life. With heart and dedication there is nothing that cannot be accomplished. Some days I just dream about playing football on the next level. The thrill of just suiting up in that jersey means the world to me. The linemen block the defensive players to stop them from tackling our running back, if we succeed we score. The Defense, my all-time favorite thing, this is where they separate the boys and the men. I love going out and just smashing some people’s helmets in. There are a so many different positions like defensive tackles, cornerbacks, safeties, and my favorite line-backers. No matter where the plan is going there will be someone there to stop them. Like that quote said defense wins championships and that is 100% true without defense it just be a track meet. This is just me but I would rather sack a quarterback than score a touchdown, but some people they are not like that. The one thing that wins and loses games is the special teams. The field goal is one of the most important things in some cases this can win the game. I have seen it send teams into the winner circle and I have seen it send teams down loser lane.
